Welcome to Tomato Season!

First of all, let's get one thing straight. When I say “tomato,” I'm NOT talking about those pale, hard, homogeneous round balls you can buy in the supermarket here in the mid-Atlantic region between October and June. Those tasteless, mealy, so-called vegetables are not worthy of the name “tomato.” I'm talking about the garden-fresh, locally-grown, pesticide-free tomatoes that are making their welcome appearance right now, at the end of July. At any good farmers' market you should find tender and juicy tomatoes of all shapes, colors and sizes – from bite-sized cherry tomatoes in red, orange, and purple, to multi-colored striped globes, to one-pound pink, oddly-shaped behemoths.

Many of the best-tasting and most interesting tomatoes are heirlooms which, according to at least one definition, means they are varieties that are open-pollinated (i.e., you can save their seeds, and the next generation of plants will produce fruit similar to the original fruit) and have been passed down through several generations or have been in circulation for more than 50 years.

Heirloom tomatoes are not only good-looking (and sometimes funny-looking) and tasty, they often have interesting names and stories. Here are a few of my favorites:

Mortgage Lifter (a.k.a Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter):
MC “Radiator Charlie” Byles was an inventor and tinkerer, and he worked as an auto mechanic specializing in radiator repairs. He lived and worked in Logan, West Virginia, where coal and timber trucks frequently blew out their radiators climbing the steep hills. (His shop was located at the bottom of one of those steep hills, so the trucks conveniently rolled backwards down to his shop when their radiators blew!) In the early 1940s, Radiator Charlie set out to “build a better tomato,” by cross-pollinating an heirloom tomato, the German Johnson, with four other tomato varieties. After seven years of seed saving and cross-breeding, he had a tomato plant he was satisfied with. The fruits were – and still are – pink, somewhat flattened, and often quite large. He sold tomato seedlings for $1 each – a good sum in those days. He sold enough seedlings to pay off the mortgage on his house.

Paul Robeson (as described in the Fedco Seeds catalog):
“This Russian heirloom was named in honor of Paul Robeson (1898-1976) who befriended the Soviet Union. Athlete (15 varsity letters at Rutgers!), actor (played Othello in the longest-running Shakespearean production in Broadway history!), singer (world famous for his vibrant baritone renditions of Negro spirituals), orator, cultural scholar and linguist (fluent in at least 15 languages!), Robeson was an outspoken crusader for racial equality and social justice. Revered by the left, reviled by the right, he was blacklisted during the McCarthy Era and beyond, harassed by the FBI, his passport revoked for eight years, his career stifled. He died broken and almost forgotten, his life a testament to lost opportunities in 20th-century American history. His namesake tomato has developed almost a cult following among seed savers . . . the maroon-brick 6–12 oz. oblate often bi-lobed fruits with dark green shoulders come closest in flavor to Black Krim, but can claim their own distinctive sweet smoky taste.” My personal favorite!

A Ukrainian heirloom tomato named by the former space engineer Igor Mikhailovich Maslov after his friend Vladislav Volkov, a Russian cosmonaut. Maslov trialed over 300 tomato varieties and believed the Cosmonaut Volkov was the best. Volkov was best known for his work in 1971 aboard Salyut 1, the first space station. He was killed aboard the Soyuz spacecraft when it was attempting to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. The Cosmonaut Volkov tomato is a great choice for those stuck on round, red tomatoes (and there's nothing wrong with that!) – rich and juicy, with that classic tomato taste.

Cherokee purple (as described in Wikipedia):
“This cultivar originated with Craig LeHoullier, who claimed it was a century-old cultivar originating with the Cherokee people. In 1990, while living in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Craig received unsolicited in the mail, from John Green of Sevierville, Tennessee, a brief note and a small packet of seeds. The note indicated that John wanted to share this unnamed tomato with Craig, and that it was a purple tomato that the Cherokee Indians gave to his neighbors 100 years ago. Upon growing the seeds and observing the fruit, Craig was surprised and delighted to find that the fruit was remarkably close to being a true purple in color (pink tomatoes were often referred to as purple in horticultural literature, so the color of the tomato was quite a surprise). The tomato was named in line with the note that accompanied the seeds, and a sample of seeds were sent that winter to Jeff McCormack, founder of Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, as well as listed in the Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) Yearbook 1991 edition. A few years later, Craig also sent it to Rob Johnston, founder of Johnny's Selected Seeds. Both seed companies elected to multiply the seed and carry the variety in their seed catalogs.”

Aunt Ruby's German Green, Golden Jubilee, Arkansas Traveler, Rose de Berne, Green Zebra . . . an endless variety of tomato flavors, colors, shapes, sizes and stories awaits your discovery this summer! Visit your favorite tomato growers throughout the season to sample the full spectrum. And be sure to
save some seeds and try growing your own next year. You'll be carrying on a time-honored tradition and helping to preserve the genetic diversity which is threatened by the corporate homogenization of our food. Mostly, you'll be doing yourself a favor, because there's nothing like growing your own food – and there's NOTHING like a homegrown tomato!

Grace Dan & The Fam performance at Terressentials was a great success!

If you missed out on Grace Dan & The Fam's performance in front of our East Patrick Street store in the evening on Saturday, July 20th, you missed a great show! Grace sang beautifully, as her brother, Dan, and father, Joe, accompanied her on percussion and guitar (respectively). She sang covers of crowd favorites including “I'm Yours” by Jason Mraz, “Little Lion Man” by Mumford & Sons, and “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men. It was quite nice to see the little crowd that gathered around the Westminster family as they shared their love of music with the East Patrick Street community and those who were just passing by. A Downtown Frederick Partnership employee even stopped by to take some great pictures!

This was just the first of the Side Roads Sounds Project performances, though. If you want to learn more about the Side Roads Sounds Project, a Terressentials initiative to bring more vibrancy and music to the “side roads” of both downtown Frederick City and Frederick County, check out this post on our Terressentials Organic News page.

August 2013 First Saturday Special!

It's that time of the month again! That's right — it's almost the first Saturday of August! That means that we are having a special during Downtown Frederick's First Saturday hours of 3 pm to 9 pm!

The theme for Downtown Frederick this month is "Rock around the Block" — an afternoon and evening of 1950s themed fun for people of all ages!

Now for those of you who may enjoy a quiet afternoon in on a Saturday (or perhaps you'd rather go hiking in the many breath-taking state and national parks in Frederick County?), you may need a little tempting to head out to see us. But you should definitely come, and bring your musician friends with you! Why musicians? Well, in conjunction with the "Rock around the Block" theme, we want to make it easier for you to rock out!  For our rockin' First Saturday special, we are taking 15% off of all of the musical instruments in the store on Saturday from 3 pm to 9 pm!  Whoo! That's right — all of fair trade and handmade unique and fun percussion instruments and drums, and our flutes, whistles, and ever-famous balaphones are included in this special! Though the tags of the instruments will not say it, the Terressentials Team Member who helps you at the counter will award you the special price at checkout.

There's something else, too! For those who already have homes crammed full of musical instruments or maybe have two left hands when it comes to music, we have something else for them to enjoy — our little soapstone animals! They are small enough to put on an office desk as a reminder of something or someone that makes you smile.  These little guys are adorable and durable, and are hand carved from ROCKS!  Adopt a happy rock pet for yourself or the family or for a friend and take advantage of our rockin' good deal of 15% off the tagged price!

So stop on by on Saturday, August 3rd, from 3 pm to 9 pm — see you then!

Remember, the First Saturday Special is applicable only in the Terressentials East Patrick Street store during Downtown Frederick's First Saturday hours of 3 pm to 9 pm.

Cathy's Kitchen Table: What Does USDA Certified Organic Chocolate Lack That Conventional Chocolates Have?

Most of us would love to have a legitimate reason to add a little more chocolate to our diet. Indulging in chocolate is a guilty pleasure for many people around the world. In its truly USDA certified organic form, chocolate is processed without chemicals, unhealthy preservatives or fillers, and is grown without toxic pesticides and fertilizers, is not irradiated, and is GMO-free. Save the earth from harmful chemicals while you satisfy your sweet tooth!

Organic chocolates lack the unhealthy preservatives, and other processed and synthetic ingredients that are in conventional chocolate-flavored products such as cereals, chocolate milk, chocolate candy, chocolate syrup, etc. Many of these chocolate-flavored products do not contain enough pure chocolate to have any antioxidant health benefits from the cocoa. In fact, these products can have a negative effect and contribute to many health problems.

But is there a “dark” side to chocolate? Chocolate can be high in calories, fat and caffeine, all of which can be detrimental to your overall health if eaten in excess. The key is moderation and eating the best types of organic chocolate for health benefits. The best types would be dark chocolates (the darker the better!) containing 70% or higher cocoa. Organic dark chocolate is less processed than milk chocolate bars and, due to its minimal processing, dark chocolate retains more of its powerful antioxidant properties. White chocolate and milk chocolate generally have lower amounts of flavanols (antioxidants) due to their lower cocoa content. Though the white and milk chocolates may not be as healthful as dark chocolate, they are still savored as delicious treats.

A large amount of scientific evidence shows organic chocolate is really good for you, but we knew this already! Organic chocolate not only contains healthy antioxidants, but also many vitamins and minerals (such as iron, magnesium, and potassium). Some folks may also find that, because organic dark chocolate is more intense, they will eat less of it.

Not all chocolate is created equal, so it is important to choose the right one for your cravings. Here at Terressentials we are sure to have just the right kind of chocolate that you hunger for! We have a wide variety of USDA certified organic chocolates to please every chocolate lover, be they a person who favors spicy chili chocolate, chocolate with chai spice, or even chocolate with Baobab fruits! We have more familiar flavors as well, including mint chocolate and salted chocolate. You can also feel even better about our certified organic chocolate selection since we offer several chocolates made with Fair Trade certified ingredients. So stop on by and stock up on some of our delectable certified organic chocolate and satisfy your chocolate cravings today!

Have A Voice As Clear As A Bell!

The bell had been hanging from a tack on a bulletin board for at least the almost year that I have worked at Terressentials. A beautifully polished brass bell from Tibet. The tag, still on it, claimed it had been individually sand cast in brass and hand-turned to ensure clarity of sound and tone. While I was sitting at the desk trying to decide what to write about for the monthly Terressentials newsletter, I started fiddling with this bell. I gave it a shake. Nothing...not a sound came from this little bell. I looked inside and to my dismay found that it did not have a clapper! Imagine, a bell not able to make the beautiful clear tone it was so carefully and individually hand turned to emit?

I believe we humans were also made to emit our own clear tone. We have a voice. Let's use it and spread the word about organics. Use simple clean, non-toxic USDA certified organic products and foods. Remember to read labels. So many products on your neighborhood grocery shelves claim to be organic and claim organic certification but if you read the labels you will see that there are a multitude of unpronounceable and mysterious ingredients. Remember, just because one ingredient is organic this one ingredient does not make the whole product organic or even good for you or our environment. Even though two things claim to make the same sound, when they ring one sounds very flat while another tone is clear. The “ring of truth” so to speak. Terressentials products ring with clarity and truth. Terressentials doesn't hide mysterious chemical ingredients in our products.

I was here the day the USDA certifier came to inspect Terressentials and their products and I saw the leaders of our small company jump through all the many hoops it takes to be able to have the USDA organic seal proudly placed on the label of our products. Why bother to go through all the trouble, you ask, when you can get away with so much surreptitiously and make the product more cheaply with no one being the wiser? Terressentials does jump through those hoops because we truly care about the products and the people who use them. We have a voice and the tone is clear. Our products are carefully cast and hand-turned to emit a beautiful sound.

And what became of the little bell? I took it home and fashioned a clapper from a beautiful, but lonely bead that didn't have a mate. I attached it to to the bell and and hung the bell back on the tack on the bulletin board. Every now and then I give it a shake and hear it's clear tone ring out as a reminder to use my own voice wisely and spread the word about Terressentials and truly USDA organic products.

Terressentials Anointing Oils Have Household Uses, Too!

You may have heard about using our USDA certified organic Hand Soaps to clean your dishes or to wash your clothes, but those four unique hand soaps are not the only Terressentials product that have an unexpected household use.

I present to you a scenario: me, a young adult who just got my own apartment, had a visit from family members coming up. Now the last time that my family visited, it was to help me move into my apartment, so everything was allowed to be a bit messy. But this time, I needed my apartment to be squeaky clean (well, more clean than its typical organized chaos was). So I swept, I vacuumed, then I cleaned off the coffee table in the den. That is when horror struck my heart. My handed down coffee table (that I think has been in my family for longer than I've been alive) had lots of dried rings from a series of cups being placed on it without a coaster. Well, crap.

I didn't want my family to see their gift (even if it was just an old hand-me-down coffee table) looking like it had been abused for the past few months (even though it arguably had been). So I got out a small bowl which I put about a cup and a half of warm water in along with a teaspoon(-ish) of Terressentials USDA certified organic Zingin' Citrus Hand Soap. I got a paper towel, and I wiped down the table.

Now anyone who has an old wood table that hasn't been taken care of properly for a few months knows that if you wipe it down with water, dried streaks will appear. This took me by surprise (remember how I hadn't taken care of the table properly in a while?). Though the table was now clean and dry, it had lots of foggy streaks going across its surface.

So, now, I had to think. How do I get rid of the streaking on my family's old wooden coffee table? Then I had a flashback from this winter when we had some carved wooden dragon walking sticks in the Terressentials East Patrick Street store. One Saturday afternoon when there wasn't much going on, Heidi, my team member, suggested I use our USDA certified organic Cocoa Butter Rich Oil to shine these spectacular walking sticks. So I put a few drops on a paper towel, and the dragon canes shined right up! Ah-hah!

Though I didn't have the simple Cocoa Butter Rich Oil on hand, I did have some of our Seductive Spice Anointing Oil (which I keep in my bathroom to use to help condition my hair when it gets a little frizzy). So I did a little experiment (after all, my wooden coffee table was a different wood and older than the dragon canes we had downtown). I put a drop of my Spice Oil on a paper towel, and rubbed a corner of the table. Under my observation, my old wooden table completely soaked up the little bit of oil I had given it. So I rubbed a little more oil on that corner. The same thing happened again, and the wood was getting a soft, rich glow.

Elated, I then rubbed down the entire table with a little bit more of my Spice Oil and a paper towel. I found it helped to rub the oil with the grain of the wood (as opposed to against it). I also noticed that different areas of the table soaked up the oil at different rates. Though some parts seemed to gleam and seem a little oily at first, when I left the table alone for a few minutes, the wood table entirely soaked up the delightful smelling USDA certified goody! After the table had soaked up all of its special organic TLC, it had a nice, warm glow that reminded me of what it looked like in my childhood, and all the smears from cleaning the table earlier with my dilute Terressentials Hand Soap and water mix were gone! Not to mention, my den now smelled wonderful – the light scent of the patchouli and cocoa from the Seductive Spice Anointing Oil. Now that I experienced this additional use of my Spice Oil, I pamper the old wooden coffee table about once every two weeks or so – when its rich glow starts to diminish a little. Each time I use the oil, the table soaks up a little less, and the cleaning process goes faster and faster!

So be adventurous! Try the Luscious Lemon Anointing Oil for a fresh scent, or the Passionate Lavender for the impression of having a small lavender plant soaking up the sunlight on the windowsill in your home. The Peppermint Fantasy is sure to give your home a crisp scent, and, as always, the Cocoa Butter Rich Oil is a favorite of those who enjoy simplicity in their life. My message: Terressentials gourmet, handcrafted USDA certified organic body care products aren't just for your hair, body, face, or baby. They are useful for many little tasks around your home, too!

A Terressentials Summer

Hey everyone! For this month's newsletter, the intern was asked to write an article. Exciting, right? Well that's me! I'm Kylie, the summer intern here at Terressentials. With only a few weeks left until I leave for school, I figured I should use this opportunity to share with you the great experience I have had working here.

Three months ago, I was mainly unfamiliar with USDA certified organic products. My first year of college was over, and I was (of course!) searching for a job. May was flying by, and June was approaching. Still no job. Fortunately, I was soon introduced to Terressentials, a genuinely USDA certified organic body care product company that happened to be settled just over the mountain. The name did not ring a bell, so I had no idea what to expect! Keeping an open mind as every job-hunter should, I thought, “Cool.” Maybe this was the opportunity I have been waiting for? As an engineering student, though, I was unsure of how I could benefit such a business. Honestly, I was nervous. I was nowhere near an expert at organics (I'm still not!). I had never used organic products or eaten organic food in my life! Would I be a sore thumb? An outsider? A few days passed, and I eventually decided to research organics and this company called Terressentials.

And, what do you know? I got the job!

After my interview, I was excited to work for such a unique small business. Working with truly USDA certified organic products these past few months have been such an educational experience. I was overwhelmed at the amount of information Terressentials provides on organics. I never realized that organics, be they food or body care products, have such a positive impact on the environment and people! Terressentials has a great number of helpful brochures, ranging from certification to dangerous chemicals found in “natural” products, supplying me and customers with information I had never known. Of course, I was intrigued to try these certified organic products! It's hard to believe I never considered using USDA certified organic body products in the past, because now I love them! My fellow team members at Terressentials put a great amount of care into each genuine handcrafted product we offer. The effort we put towards making these products is for the benefit of our customers and, after seeing this business work, I am happy to continue using these products. I have yet to try them all, but I definitely have a few favorites!

My sensitive skin has been thriving as a result of the Fragrance Free Facial Cleanser. After trying several facial products for years to make my skin soft, clean, and clear, I am very happy with the facial cleanser. The best part about it? A little bit goes a long way! After two months of using this product once a day, my 6-oz bottle is still three-quarters of the way full! (Even my mom has been sneaking some of my cleanser!) I also love how absorbent and light-weight the Fragrance-Free Body Lotion is! My two other favorite products are the Mint White Chocolate Lip Protector and the Lemon Body Wash. They both smell delicious! While the mint flavor soothes and tingles my lips, the lemon flavor refreshes my skin on these hot summer days.

Overall, I am very thankful to have worked at Terressentials this season. I learned more about organics than I thought I would ever know, and I have discovered some amazing products that I cannot wait to share with my family and friends! Do you love our products? Tell your family and friends! Also, subscribe to our email list if you haven't yet. Thank you to all of our customers, because Terressentials would not thrive without you!

Side Roads Sounds Project!

Who doesn't love music? Listening to and creating music is a great way to de-stress, a fantastic outlet for personal expression and for directing energy.  Best of all, good music makes people happy!

The Side Roads Sounds Project is an experimental initiative of Terressentials developed as a way for our small business to give back to the Frederick County community.  We are artisan handcrafters of USDA certified organic body care products and we support many Fair Trade artisan crafters worldwide and Fair Made USA artists. As several of our Terressentials team members are artists and/or musicians, we think it would be great to host local musical artists at our Frederick location and, in the future, at our Middletown location to support our local arts community. For our new experimental musical venture, we coined the name “Side Roads Sounds Project” to emphasize that we want to bring more foot traffic and good energy to other parts of Frederick City other than just Market Street and Carroll Creek (in downtown Frederick), and to more than just downtown Frederick.  Most importantly, however, we hope that our Side Roads Sounds Project will inspire folks to realize that one can often discover great treasures and experience exciting adventures when one takes the road less traveled.

So, what genres of music are we looking for?  If you've got a great, original upbeat sound, a world beat, or your energetic music makes people smile, dance or clap their hands — we want to hear from you!  We welcome acapella singers — we know that man-made instruments aren't always necessary to make truly good music!  On another note, we do also appreciate unusual and handmade instruments. We'd like to share that, as our Side Roads Sounds Project is a family/community-oriented project, at this time, we seek more accessible music so hard rock, metal, rap, grunge, acid rock, etc., is not being considered.

Don't be shy! If you are interested in participating in our project and would like us to consider you or your group, please email us a link to your web site so that we can learn more about who you are and to hear examples of your musical art. Feel free to drop your CD and any of your band art/brochures at our Frederick store at 100 East Patrick Street. If you have a wide variety of music, please direct us to specific songs on your CD/website that you feel best represent your work and that will fit with what we are looking for.  We hope to hear from you soon!

Summer Special Series: Fragrance-Free Body Lotion for FREE

This is a photo of Molly, a former Team Member and daughter of another Team Member, from a few years back.
Look at that lovely smile!

We offer many different USDA certified organic goodies for your body in fresh scents that remind you of hot summer days and a garden luncheon. But what about those who prefer that no scent or those individuals with multiple sensitivies syndrome?

We have an answer — our Fragrance-Free personal care products! Many people know about our Fragrance-Free Hair Wash, but we also have  Fragrance-Free Facial Care System: Cleanser, Toner, Facial Lotion, Moisture Cream; Gentle Bath Gel, and Body Lotion. Remember folks, Fragrance-Free doesn't mean unscented. Lots of companies use chemical processes to make their products "unscented." Our Fragrance-Free line is USDA certified organic and has no chemicals in it. More to the point, it has no added essential oils for scent. However, we do include organic herbal extracts to nourish your skin and normally the herbal extracts have their own delightful, light herbally aroma.

As we mentioned earlier, the Fragrance-Free Facial Care line is great for those with sensitive skin. Also, be sure to check out the "sensitive skin" tag on our Hair Help Resource Guide to learn about how what you put on your hair is affecting your skin.

We have a special offer for you to try this gentle, but effective, facial care line. We are offering the following: If you order one Fragrance-Free Facial Cleanser, one Fragrance-Free Facial Toner, and one Fragrance-Free Facial Lotion together in one order, you will receive one 2 oz bottle of Fragrance-Free Body Lotion for FREE!

Applicable to online orders placed between 12:01 am East Coast U.S. time on Saturday, July 13, 2013 and 11:59 pm East Coast U.S. time on Friday, July 26, 2013.

July 2013 First Saturday Special!

Thanks bayasaa!

As we mentioned in our Newsletter that went out a few days ago, we are having a special in our downtown Frederick store this Saturday, July 6, since it the First Saturday of July. Since the Downtown Frederick Partnership has chosen the theme of "Stars & Stripes" for the First Saturday celebrations in downtown Frederick, we have decided to promote the Fair Made USA artisan crafters who are featured in our store. During the official First Saturday hours (3 pm to 9 pm) we will award patrons 15% off their purchase of items that were made in the US. The 15% off will be awarded manually by a Team Member when you bring your selections to the counter. This special excludes our gourmet artisan teas and chocolates that are made in the US.

So what sort of things do you have in your shop that are Fair Made USA?

We have many Fair Made USA handbags, a good bit of delightful and unique jewelry, and much more! Our own USDA certified organic Terressentials personal care products even qualify!

How can I identify the Fair Made USA items in your store?

You may notice on most of the items in our downtown Frederick shop, there are little cards that say what the item is and may have a barcode on the bottom. The top part of the card has a check list of common countries that the item could be from. The country that the item is from should be checked. Since the USA is not a common option, we normally hand write that the item is from the USA on the card. If you have any questions, feel free to ask a Terressentials Team Member!

What is Fair Made USA?

Fair Made USA is a Terressentials-coined term that we use to identify small artisan businesses within the USA who handcraft items. While there are lots of big factories chugging out "Made in the USA" items, the artisans that we choose to support are just like us — they invest a lot of time and effort into making the best crafts that they can because they care and are proud of their work.

Note: This special is applicable to in-store purchases only at our 100 East Patrick St, Frederick, Maryland store between the hours of 3 pm and 9 pm on July 6th only. Online purchases do not qualify, nor do purchases made in our Middletown store during this time period.
